Plot summary
Ordered to the rear for rest, a ragtag group of American soldiers shelters in the Maldorais, a 10th-century Belgian castle whose walls hold irreplaceable art. Major Abraham Falconer, a one-eyed officer, commands the squad, and Captain Beckman, an art expert, argues with him about the treasures as he moves them into storage beneath the castle. Falconer begins an affair with the young Countess Therese; the Count, who cannot continue his line himself, hopes the Major will father her child. The enlisted men seek their own pleasures in the nearby town, at the Reine Rouge brothel run by a mystic madam, and Sergeant Rossi, a peacetime baker, courts a widow in the village.
