Piper Laurie
Biography
Piper Laurie was an American actress who, after signing a contract with Universal Studios in 1949 and adopting a new screen name in place of Rosetta Jacobs, became known for roles across film, television and the stage. She first drew notice in Louisa (1950) and earned an Academy Award nomination for playing Paul Newman's girlfriend in The Hustler (1961). She returned to features as Margaret White in the horror film Carrie (1976), gaining another Oscar nomination, and received a third for Children of a Lesser God (1986). Later credits included Other People's Money (1991), Trauma (1993), The Faculty (1998), Eulogy (2004), The Dead Girl (2006), Hesher (2010) and White Boy Rick (2018). On television she played Catherine Martell in Twin Peaks, appeared in the miniseries The Thorn Birds, and won a Primetime Emmy for Promise. Her stage work included The Glass Menagerie and Morning's at Seven on Broadway.
