Plot summary
A documentary crew follows Leslie Vernon as he prepares to take his place among the slasher killers who, in this world, are historical figures. Taylor Gentry, Doug and Todd film his training and his talk of the tricks that make such a spree work. Leslie says he is the boy of a local urban legend, possessed and killed by the townsfolk but surviving, and he keeps his real reasons to himself. He intends to strike at his family's rundown farm in the woods, where he has mapped routes, cut off exits, rigged the electricity and tampered with the weapons in the barn. He has already selected Kelly Curtis, a student of seventeen, as the girl he means to face him. His mentor Eugene describes killers as a sacrifice that calls out the good in the world.

- Actor Scott Wilson's character, mentor slasher Eugene, was written as a homage to Billy Lenz, the killer from the 1974 film Black Christmas. Early drafts of the script more heavily implied Eugene actually was Billy before the writer scaled the connection back into a broader archetype of past slasher villains.
- Actor Scott Wilson joined the cast on the recommendation of his friend Robert Englund, who had already been cast in the film.
- The film's limited budget forced the crew to rewrite parts of the script during the shoot to fit whatever filming locations they could get, and several locations needed for specific scenes were only found and scouted in the middle of production, well after shooting had already started.
