Biography

Allan Graf is an American stuntman, stunt coordinator, second unit director and former football player who was born in Los Angeles and raised in Sylmar, California. He played offensive guard on the University of Southern California team that went undefeated and won a national championship in 1972, and after a brief spell in professional football he moved into stunt work, doubling for Chicago Bears player Dick Butkus on the comedy Gus. He became known for coordinating stunts on football films such as Any Given Sunday and Friday Night Lights. Frequent work with director Walter Hill led him to coordinate stunts and direct second unit on the 1989 film Johnny Handsome, and he later directed second unit on Wayne's World, Jerry Maguire, The Waterboy, The Replacements and We Were Soldiers. He has also acted in many films and television shows, including a role in the HBO series Deadwood.

  1. First role

While he was still a Portland Storm player, Graf did side work for Disney in Santa Clarita. He served as stunt double for Dick Butkus of the Chicago Bears on Gus, a children's sports comedy about a mule that kicks field goals.

  2. A first

Walter Hill had often worked with Graf, and in 1989 Hill asked him to coordinate stunts for Johnny Handsome and to direct its second unit, something Graf had never done before.

  3. Own stunts

Graf performed a cannon-roll with a school bus for Another 48 Hrs., lifting the bus 17 ft with dynamite and rolling it 285 ft down the highway.

  4. Getting ready for a role

For Friday Night Lights, Graf interviewed more than 900 people himself to fill a forty-man roster, which included doubles for the actors. Once he chose the talent, he made a playbook and had the roster run plays, easing the actors into practices.
