Plot summary
In rural Texas, a family finds a boy in their front yard and takes him in for the night. He lets a man into the house and the two rob it; when the father interrupts them, the man kills the family, leaving only a baby alive. Years later the boy is Arlis Sweeney, a solitary man who drives across Texas restocking vending machines. He gives Kay Davies a ride home and helps her leave a husband who sold their furniture to cover gambling debts. The two begin to fall for each other. One night at their motel, a young thief named Ginnie knocks and asks him to look at her car; outside, Arlis finds his father Roy, shot and needing care.
