Plot summary
A Senate Armed Services Committee weighs a candidate for Secretary of the Navy, and Senator Lillian DeHaven of Texas criticizes the service for not being gender-neutral. A deal follows: if women hold their own against men in a series of trials, the Navy will open every occupation to them. The trial begins with the Combined Reconnaissance Team course. DeHaven picks topographical analyst Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, physically more feminine than the other candidates. Command Master Chief John James Urgayle runs the training, where close to sixty percent of candidates fail, many before the fourth week, and the third week is especially intensive. O'Neil outranks Urgayle but answers to him during training. Offered a thirty-second gender-norming allowance on an obstacle course, she asks to be held to the same standard as the men.

- Though the film received generally favorable reviews and Demi Moore's performance received some praise, she still won the Razzie Award for Worst Actress, a result commonly attributed to her role in the critically panned Striptease the year prior.
- Screenwriter David Twohy told Yahoo! Entertainment that Demi Moore gave "the performance of her career" and needed "a total, unflinching commitment to that part", adding that she should have been nominated for G.I. Jane and would have been "if not for Striptease", which "tainted her chances".
- In a 2025 interview with Letterboxd, director Ridley Scott praised the film, declaring that with Demi Moore "we made a very, very good film with G.I. Jane" and that he thinks "it is the best pro-women film honestly ever made, even better than Thelma & Louise".
- G.I. Jane opened at No. 1 at the US box office and stayed there for two weeks, ultimately grossing $98.4 million worldwide on a $50 million budget, and in her autobiography Inside Out Demi Moore called it her proudest professional achievement.
