Jason Miller

Biography

The American actor and playwright Jason Miller, born in Queens and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, first made his name with his play That Championship Season, which brought him a Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as a Tony Award for Best Play. That same year he was offered the part of Father Damien Karras in The Exorcist (1973), for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor; he reprised the role in The Exorcist III (1990). He turned down the lead in Taxi Driver (1976) and later directed a screen version of That Championship Season in 1982. His film work included The Ninth Configuration (1980) and Rudy (1993), while he also served as artistic director of the Scranton Public Theatre. In 1998 he toured in his one-man play Barrymore's Ghost, and his final project, a 2001 revival of The Odd Couple, was to feature him as Oscar Madison. He died in 2001.

Following his Exorcist nomination, Miller got an offer to star in Taxi Driver, but he said no so he could work on Robert Mulligan's The Nickel Ride.
Beyond film
Miller's one-man play Barrymore's Ghost went on a national tour in 1998. The tour finished with a four-month run off-Broadway.
