Plot summary
The Feathers and the Gutshalls are two neighboring families in rural Tennessee, led by Laban Feather and Pap Gutshall, at odds with each other. Their sons trade harmless tricks at first, and the Gutshalls invent a girlfriend named Lolly-Madonna to draw the Feather boys away from their still. The Feathers instead seize a young woman passing through the countryside, Roonie Gill, and keep her with them. Roonie has no part in the quarrel. Zack Feather, one of the Feather sons, grows close to her while the families carry on retaliating against each other's property, and the two look for a way to bring the others to their senses.
