Biography

Rob Riggle is an American comedian and actor who built a career from improv and sketch comedy, including work with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and the group Respecto Montalban. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he was a Marine Corps Reserve officer and retired as a lieutenant colonel. After studying theater and film at the University of Kansas, he became a featured player on Saturday Night Live for the 2004 to 2005 season and a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2006 to 2008. His film work includes Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Step Brothers (2008), The Hangover (2009), Killers (2010), The Internship (2013), Let's Be Cops (2014), My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016), and How to Be a Latin Lover (2017). On television he played Gil Thorpe on Modern Family, co-starred in NTSF:SD:SUV::, and co-hosted Holey Moley. He also voiced characters in the Hotel Transylvania films, The Lorax (2012), Bob's Burgers, and Rick and Morty.

  1. A change of course

    Riggle enlisted in the Marines in 1990 after earning his pilot's license, hoping to be a naval aviator. He quit flight school instead to chase a career in comedy.

  2. Big break

    In the summer of 2004, Riggle and Rob Huebel tried out together for Saturday Night Live, and Riggle was the one who made the cut. He then spent one season on the show, from 2004 to 2005.

  3. A change of course

    Riggle began performing stand-up in 2006 after John Oliver, with whom he shared an office at The Daily Show, encouraged him to try it.
