  1. Own stunts

While at SNL, Parnell was called "The Ice Man" because he seemed immune to breaking character, as Tina Fey and Beth McCarthy Miller noted on a DVD commentary, citing the "More Cowbell" sketch, where no other actor held it together.

  2. Early training

After college, Parnell moved to Houston for an apprentice actor program at the Alley Theatre, but he was not asked back to join the company.

  3. A change of course

In 1992, Parnell relocated to Los Angeles. There he spent five years employed at FAO Schwarz and also took classes at the Groundlings.
