Plot summary
Rafe Khatchadorian is a quiet teenager who fills his sketchbook with drawings that come alive in his imagination. He lives with his mother Jules, his younger sister Georgia and Jules's boyfriend Carl, who goes by Bear. Rafe starts at Hills Village Middle School, the last school in the area that will take him. Principal Dwight and Vice Principal Stricker enforce a long list of rules, and Dwight cites Rafe for his shirt and his headphones on his first day. A classmate passes Rafe's sketchbook forward, Stricker confiscates it and Rafe is sent to Dwight's office, where Dwight throws the book into a bucket of acid.
