Plot summary

Doug Benson is a stand-up comedian who once held the title Stoner of the Year. In the film he stops using cannabis for one month, then uses it every day for a second month, submitting to tests of his physical and mental health throughout. The idea came from a joke in his own act about a fast-food documentary, and a producer who hoped to make a film about medical marijuana in Los Angeles took it up. California law shaped the shoot, so Benson did not drive for those thirty days and the crew drove him instead. Alongside the tests, the documentary hears from patients, dispensary owners, activists and politicians.

Super High Me premiered at more than 1,000 venues on April 20, 2008, the widest documentary opening ever.
In 2014 other producers of Super High Me planned a sequel, Super High Me Redux, made from extra footage shot for the film; star Doug Benson sued to stop it being made.
Super High Me began with a joke in Doug Benson's stand-up act: if there could be a movie about a guy eating McDonald's every day, why not one about smoking pot every day? He shared it with filmmaker Michael Blieden, and producer Alex Campbell seized on the project after Blieden mentioned it; six months later it was in production.
Doug Benson kept his 30 days of cannabis use legally tolerated in California by not operating a motor vehicle during filming; the film's crew drove him everywhere.
