Plot summary
Dan Sanders works in real estate in Chicago. His employer, Neal Lyman, sends him to Oregon to oversee a housing development on the forest at Rocky Springs, and Dan brings his wife Tammy and his son Tyler along. Both of them miss Chicago, and Tyler resents the move. The animals of the forest, led by a raccoon, refuse to let their home be cleared, and they set about disrupting Dan's work and his meetings, leaving him humiliated. Tyler meets a girl named Amber, who disapproves of what Dan is doing. Tammy teaches at the local high school, where she is told to organize an eco-friendly fair sponsored by Lyman's company. When Dan complains about the animals, nobody believes him.

- Brooke Shields asked to be hit in the face with a statue made of real meat, not a fake cardboard one, for the meat rabbit scene; a "cardboard thing" on the prop resulted in her breaking her nose.
- Steve Carell went on board to play the real estate developer in what would have been his first studio film with top billing. Jeremy Piven was announced to replace him in November 2005, and a May 2007 Variety article announced Samuel L. Jackson in the role.
- Dick Van Dyke was announced to appear in the film, but he does not make an appearance in the final cut.
