Plot summary
Brennan Huff is thirty-nine and Dale Doback is forty. Neither has a job, and each still lives with his single parent. When Brennan's divorced mother, Nancy, marries Dale's widowed father, Robert, the two men have to share a home, and a bedroom, because Dale refuses to give up the drum set in his office. Brennan touches the kit anyway, and a fight follows. Nancy and Robert take away television for a week and tell them to find jobs or face eviction. At a family visit, Brennan's younger brother Derek, who leases helicopters, humiliates the pair, and Dale punches him. Robert lines up job interviews, but both men do poorly.

- Property master Scott Maginnis pushed for a realistic look to the pair of prosthetic testicles that Ferrell rubs against a drum kit, because he anticipated close camera coverage, and production designer Clayton Hartley agreed the effect needed to look convincing.
- Jenkins was inoculated against tetanus after sustaining a puppy dog bite on his rear while shooting Ferrell and Reilly's fight sequence. He insisted on acting limp for the next scene to give his footage a sense of continuity, and McKay then told him the dog-bite sequence would not be used.
- McKay said the production exposed a very large amount of film stock, which reportedly measured over 1.5 million feet before editing, and Kodak acknowledged the volume with a celebratory gesture during the shoot.
- Adam Scott recalled being cast unexpectedly and described the role as his first major step into screen comedy. Before it went to him, Dax Shepard and Jon Hamm had auditioned for it, and both would later recall being upset that neither one was cast.
