Plot summary
Gene is an emoji in Textopolis, the city inside the phone of middle school student Alex. His parents, the meh emojis Mel and Mary, hesitate to let him go to work, but Gene wants to feel useful. He can make more than one expression, which no other emoji can, and it leaves him an outcast. When Alex receives a text from his love interest Addie McCallister and chooses Gene to reply, Gene panics, pulls a strange face and wrecks the text center. Smiler, the smiley head of the text center, declares him a malfunction and sets bots on him. Hi-5, a once-popular emoji now stuck in the Loser Lounge, rescues him and tells him a hacker could fix him; the pair set out, Hi-5 hoping to win back his fame.
