Mel Blanc

Biography

Mel Blanc, an American voice actor and radio personality, worked for more than sixty years. Born in San Francisco in 1908 and raised partly in Portland, Oregon, he began in radio at 19, supplying voices and sound effects for comedy programs such as The Jack Benny Program. In 1936 he joined Leon Schlesinger Productions and became known for voicing many Warner Bros. cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Wile E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn, the Tasmanian Devil, and many others. He later voiced Barney Rubble and Dino on The Flintstones and Mr. Spacely on The Jetsons. Other credits included Pinocchio (1940), Strange Brew (1983), Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979), and Jetsons: The Movie (1990). He was the first of his profession to get a screen credit and later received a star on the Walk of Fame. He died in 1989.

Did you know?!

  1. A first

Mel Blanc holds a place in animation history: he became the first voice actor to get an on-screen credit for his work.

  2. Big break

Blanc's first starring role came when he replaced Joe Dougherty as the voice of Porky Pig in Porky's Duck Hunt, which also introduced Daffy Duck, voiced by Blanc.

  3. A role that slipped away

In Disney's Pinocchio, Blanc was hired to voice Gideon the Cat, but the character was made mute, so all his dialogue was cut except for a single hiccup heard three times.

  4. First role

Blanc originated Woody Woodpecker's voice and laugh for Walter Lantz's theatrical cartoons, but after the first four shorts he stopped when Warner Bros. signed him to an exclusive contract.

  5. A change of course

Blanc voiced Private Snafu in a series of Warner Bros. shorts produced during World War II as a way to train recruited soldiers through animation.

  6. Getting ready for a role

Blanc described Sylvester the Cat as the simplest character for him to voice, since the cat was his regular speaking voice plus a spray at the end, while Yosemite Sam was the toughest because of his loudness and raspiness.
