Daws Butler

Biography

Daws Butler was an American voice actor who worked mostly for the Hanna-Barbera cartoon company and the Walter Lantz studio. Born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, he began performing as an impressionist in 1935 and later formed the comedy trio The Three Short Waves. His first animated voice role came in Short Snorts on Sports (1948), and Tex Avery hired him for Little Rural Riding Hood (1949) and other Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoons. On Time for Beany, he and Stan Freberg provided the puppet voices, and the show aired from 1949 to 1954 and collected several Emmy Awards. After Hanna and Barbera formed their own company, Butler voiced Reddy on The Ruff and Reddy Show and originated characters including Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Snagglepuss, and Elroy Jetson. He also voiced several characters in The Phantom Tollbooth (1970) and continued to voice Hanna-Barbera roles for decades. He died in 1988.

Did you know?!

  1. First role

In 1935, Daws Butler started doing impressionist performances and joined several amateur contests, winning most of them. He did it to challenge himself and get past his shyness, not to display his talent, and then won professional vaudeville engagements.

  2. A role that slipped away

At MGM, Avery asked Butler to voice Droopy while Bill Thompson was busy with radio work. Butler recorded a few lines, then suggested Don Messick, another actor and his lifelong friend, who could imitate Thompson better.

  3. A first

Butler's first team-up with a partner was "St. George and the Dragonet", a parody based on Dragnet. No other comedy record had reached a million copies sold before it.

  4. Getting ready for a role

Daws Butler based the voice of Cap'n Crunch on character actor Charles Butterworth and played the cereal mascot from the 1960s to the 1980s.

  5. Early training

Daws Butler began an acting workshop in 1975 that trained voice actors including Nancy Cartwright, Corey Burton, Bill Farmer and Bob Bergen.
