Plot summary
When Dave Seville leaves on a business trip to Europe, Alvin, Simon and Theodore stay behind in Los Angeles with their babysitter, Miss Miller. After playing an arcade game called Around the World in 30 Days, Alvin and Brittany quarrel about who would win such a race for real. Klaus and Claudia Furschtein smuggle diamonds and need couriers their nemesis Jamal will not recognize, so Claudia proposes a genuine balloon race with a $100,000 prize. Alvin splices a recording of Dave's voice so that Miss Miller believes Dave wants the children to meet him in Europe. Each team departs with twelve dolls to swap at designated stops, not knowing what the dolls carry.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Disney's The Black Cauldron flopped in 1985, a number of Walt Disney Productions animators were laid off, among them Glen Keane, Dan Haskett and Dave Pruiksma; Ross Bagdasarian Jr. promptly hired them to work on The Chipmunk Adventure.
- Overseas animation came back at a crawl: Ross Bagdasarian Jr. and Janice Karman received only six seconds of footage several months in and five minutes a year later, blamed on the animators' "sore hands," so they hired another 150 animators to finish the film.
- Two months after production began, the film's unnamed director was replaced by Janice Karman, who was pregnant with her first child and had been reluctant to take the directing job.
- Parts of the script that were hard to animate or too far from finished were cut, including planned stops at the San Diego Zoo, Barbados, London, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Moscow.
- The Chipmunk Adventure was the Chipmunks' first theatrical film; the franchise's second, Alvin and the Chipmunks, did not reach cinemas until December 14, 2007, 20 years later.
