Plot summary
Jiminy Cricket arrives at the shop of Geppetto, a woodworker and toymaker in a village in Italy who shares his home with a cat, Figaro, and a fish, Cleo. Geppetto builds a marionette, names him Pinocchio, and falls asleep wishing upon a star that the puppet be a real boy. The Blue Fairy appears that night and gives the puppet life, though he is still a puppet. She tells him that proving himself brave, truthful and unselfish will make him a real boy, and she names Jiminy his conscience. Geppetto wakes and is overjoyed.

- Mel Blanc recorded the voice of Gideon the Cat over sixteen days, but the filmmakers decided Gideon would be mute, so all of his dialogue was deleted except for one hiccup, heard three times in the finished film.
- Pinocchio won two Academy Awards in 1940, for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for "When You Wish Upon a Star", and was the first Disney film to win either category.
- Pinocchio was the first animated film to use celebrities as voice actors, an approach Walt Disney took after the huge success of Snow White.
- Jiminy Cricket's song "When You Wish Upon a Star" became a major hit, is still identified with the film, and later became the theme song of The Walt Disney Company itself.
- Effects animator Sandy Strother kept a diary of his year-long animation of the water effects, and to give the ocean depth the animators drew more detail on the foreground waves and less as the surface receded.
- Because animating a realistic moving vehicle was so difficult, the artists filmed the carriage maquettes on a miniature set in stop motion, then transferred each frame onto animation cels with an early version of a Xerox.
- Walt Disney halted production on Pinocchio because he felt no one could sympathize with the film's wooden-puppet design; Fred Moore then redesigned the character to make him more appealing.
