Plot summary
A visiting British woman pays the elderly villager Buldeo to tell her a story of his youth. He recalls the night Shere Khan, a rogue Bengal tiger, attacked his village, killed a man and left that man's child lost to the jungle, where grey wolves raise him. Twelve years on, villagers capture Mowgli, and his mother Messua takes him in. He learns to speak and copies human ways while keeping his jungle habits. Buldeo, a merchant, dislikes the boy for coming from the jungle, though Buldeo's daughter Mahala becomes his friend. Walking the jungle together, the two find a hidden chamber inside a ruined palace, where Mahala takes a single coin.
