Plot summary
Alice's homework is a book report on the original Lewis Carroll novel, and her dog Fluff, in a playful mood, will not let her get on with it. She throws a ball for him, and it bounces toward the living room television set and passes through the screen. Fluff runs after it and disappears. Alice goes after the dog and falls through the screen herself, landing in Wonderland, which is refashioned as television. There she meets a shy White Rabbit, a Cheshire Cat with a beatnik manner, an eccentric Mad Hatter, a glamorous Queen of Hearts and a hard-boiled egg called Humphrey Dumpty.

- Hedda Hopper, the gossip columnist, voiced Hedda Hatter, a new character who drops into the Mad Tea Party. It was her last public appearance; she died two months before the special was broadcast.
- Sammy Davis Jr. was replaced by Scatman Crothers as the Cheshire Cat on the tie-in record album, unable to provide the speaking and singing voice because he was under exclusive contract to Reprise Records.
- Henry Corden, who sang for Fred Flintstone, also took over the character's speaking voice on the record album, replacing Alan Reed. Corden officially inherited the role in 1977, after Reed's death.
- Charles Shows adapted Bill Dana's teleplay into a record album and banged out the script in a weekend. His autobiography's anecdote about the rush job misleadingly implies, by not particularizing the LP, that he wrote the actual TV special.
