Plot summary
Twenty-five years before, a mother died in childbirth in the Ozarks after being apparently abandoned by the baby's father. The child, Young Matt Matthews, was raised by Aunt Mollie, who holds the absent father responsible and taught the boy to find and kill him. Matt makes moonshine in the hills, and Sammy Lane is his girl. Then Daniel Howitt, an educated stranger from the city, arrives and buys a tract called Moanin' Meadow, where Matt's mother is buried and which the locals believe is cursed and haunted. Matt objects to the purchase, but Howitt helps his new neighbors, and the two men become friends.
