Plot summary
Johnny Colini, an American who lives in exile in Rome, takes Salvatore Giordano under his wing after the young Sicilian outlaw runs afoul of the police. Colini has Giordano groomed and polished, renames him Johnny Cool, and sends him to the United States. There, on Colini's orders, Johnny sets out to kill the underworld figures who engineered Colini's downfall and forced him out of the country. In New York he begins working through the names on the list. Darien Guinness, a wealthy divorcée, takes up with him and becomes his accomplice. The FBI starts to take notice of the killings.
