Plot summary
Bob Cain Jr. has been close to his father, Robert Cain Sr., a stockbroker, until Cain Sr. is sentenced to prison for embezzling funds. Bob falls out with him, quits college and looks for work, but his father's notoriety follows him: he is fired once an employer learns who he is. Mickey Dwyer, a gangster sentenced alongside Cain Sr., is granted parole. Bob goes to Dwyer's attorney, the former judge Emmett T. Brennan. Outside Brennan's apartment he meets Lucky Dubarry, Dwyer's girlfriend, who pretends to know him. Bob calls himself Johnny Apollo, taking the surname from a neon sign across the street. Brennan tells him that parole takes money. Dwyer then offers Bob a hundred dollars to bail out one of his crew, and soon offers him steady work.
