Plot summary
George Armstrong Custer, an officer who made his name in the Civil War, takes over the cavalry that keeps the peace in the Dakotas. He learns that the government's agreements with the tribes mean little, that their lands are being taken, and that those who want the tribes driven off their hunting grounds find ready encouragement. His wife Elizabeth accompanies him, and his standing in Washington rises and falls. Miners keep heading into Indian country to look for gold, among them his own Sergeant Mulligan, who deserts to join them. He also sets out to humble the warrior Dull Knife.

- While director Robert Siodmak choreographed fifty couples for a ballroom scene, an actor punched him and walked off the set. Writer Julian Zimet was brought in by producer Philip Yordan to write lines covering the man's absence so the scene could continue without reshooting.
- Hired to deliver a stock Western "sainted hero martyr" script, writers Bernard Gordon and Julian Zimet found star Robert Shaw reworking the film to suit himself, turning Custer into what Zimet called "a sadist of Shakespearean depth."
