Plot summary
Molly Wood leaves Vermont for a schoolteaching post in Medicine Bow, Wyoming. A spooked steer frightens her on arrival, and a cowboy known as the Virginian comes to her rescue; the animal is only a little girl's pet, and Molly takes a dislike to him. The Taylors give her a place in their old home, and the Virginian courts her. Steve Andrews, a friend he has not seen in three years, takes an interest in her too. Around them, cattle rustlers are driving families off their land, and the Virginian warns Steve about the company he keeps, telling him he will not cover up rustling. Before a long cattle drive he asks Molly to decide about their future by the time he returns.
