Plot summary
Gravelle has spent seven years locked in an asylum, with no memory of who he is. When that memory comes back, he recalls that his wife and her lover once plotted to kill him, and he escapes to the San Marco opera house, hiding in its rooms and passageways. Performers there are then killed one by one. Charlie Chan, at the house to watch an opera, investigates. Alongside Gravelle, suspicion falls on Lilli Rochelle, the company's leading soprano, who is secretly involved with the baritone Enrico Borelli; her husband Mr. Whitely, who has warned Borelli away from her; Anita Borelli, the second soprano, who knows about her husband's affair with Lilli; and Phil Childers, who wants to marry Lilli's unacknowledged daughter but has been refused.
