Nauvoo, Illinois, 1844. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church, is killed by a mob, and the members turn to Brigham Young to lead them. Young takes Smith's place as president of the church, and under his direction the Mormons leave Illinois, settling for a time in Nebraska before starting west by wagon train toward the Great Basin. Two of the travelers, Jonathan Kent and Zina Webb, make the crossing of the Rocky Mountains with the rest, bound for the valley where the community intends to build its new home, and the hardships of the journey test them all.
