Plot summary
The murder of a local mobster gives Remy McSwain, a lieutenant in the New Orleans police, a case that his department reads as a war between two crime families. The state district attorney, Anne Osborne, comes to look into claims of corruption in the force. She watches Remy at work, calls his methods unorthodox and says he is taking payoffs. He replies that she fails to understand how his city's police system works. He counts himself an honest cop, though he goes along with the kickbacks the precinct keeps for its widows and orphans.
