Plot summary
Francisco Scaramanga is a hitman who works with a golden gun and gold bullets, and no one knows his appearance beyond a third nipple. When MI6 receives a golden bullet etched with 007, the service believes Scaramanga sent it, and M pulls James Bond off his assignment to find the scientist Gibson. Bond hunts for Scaramanga without permission. He collects a spent bullet from a dancer in Beirut, traces it to a gunsmith in Macau, and follows the shipment to Hong Kong, where Andrea Anders, Scaramanga's girlfriend, tells him about the killer. M and Q then send him to recover the Solex Agitator, a solar energy device.

- The Man with the Golden Gun was the last Bond film Harry Saltzman co-produced; he sold his 50% stake in the franchise's parent company after its release, and the series then went on hiatus until The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977.
- The villain role of Scaramanga was first offered to Jack Palance, who turned it down. It went instead to Christopher Lee, Ian Fleming's real-life step-cousin, whom Fleming had once suggested for Dr. No, only for Lee to learn producers had already cast Joseph Wiseman in that part.
- Britt Ekland grew upset on hearing that Maud Adams had been cast in the film, wrongly assuming Adams had taken the Mary Goodnight role she wanted; producer Albert Broccoli then called Ekland himself to offer her that part after seeing her in another movie.
- The Golden Gun prop was built to look like ordinary desk items, with a fountain pen as the barrel, a cigarette lighter as the bullet chamber, a cigarette case as the handle and a cufflink as the trigger, and it was designed to fire a custom 4.2-millimetre, 23-carat gold bullet.
- Rocker Alice Cooper wrote and recorded his own theme song called "Man with the Golden Gun" hoping the producers would use it, but they chose Lulu's version instead, so Cooper released his own take on his album Muscle of Love.
- A musical sample from the film's incidental cue "Hip's Trip" turned up decades later in The Prodigy's track "Mindfields," on their album The Fat of the Land.
