Plot summary
A murder is reported aboard the freighter Susan B. Jennings as the ship sails from Shanghai to Honolulu. Word reaches the Chan household while Charlie Chan is at the hospital, waiting for his daughter to give birth to his first grandchild. His second son, Jimmy, takes the message and, hoping to show what he can do as a detective, goes aboard the ship claiming to be his father, with his brother Tommy beside him. The captain, Johnson, is keen to unload a cargo of lions bound for the San Francisco Zoo.
