Plot summary
Chuck and Ferdie work at a gas station and dream of better jobs. A turn waiting tables at the Chez Glamour nightclub ends in a scene and a dismissal; Ferdie pictures a nightclub of his own. Gangster Moose Matson pulls in for gas and a cleaning, and when the police spot him he speeds away with the two of them stuck in the car. His will leaves the estate to whoever was with him when he died, so the rundown Forrester's Club passes to Chuck and Ferdie. An associate, Charlie Smith, arranges a wildcat bus to the tavern, and the driver abandons the pair there in a downpour along with three unrelated travelers: a doctor, a waitress and a radio actress.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hold That Ghost (1941)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Universal pulled Abbott and Costello's Oh, Charlie from near-completion after Buck Privates became one of its biggest hits, rushed out In the Navy instead, then restarted shooting in mid-May 1941 to add Andrews Sisters and Ted Lewis numbers at the film's front and back.
- The original cut of Hold That Ghost opened with Chuck and Ferdie at their gas station and climaxed with a prison faction of Mattson's gang fighting rival gangsters over loot that turned out to be counterfeit.
- Reworking Oh, Charlie cost Universal anywhere from $25,000 to $150,000 depending on which studio source was asked, and the new and re-shot scenes were scripted mainly by Edmund L. Hartmann without credit.
