Plot summary
Joe Bell goes to prison for sixteen months over a burglary he never committed, and he comes out bitter. A boxcar ride with two brothers ends in a quarrel with a robber, and Joe is sentenced to a work farm for ninety days. There he strikes up a friendship with Mabel Alden. Her stepfather, the farm's foreman Charles Garreth, does not approve of it, and the older man and Joe fight. Joe knocks Garreth down, and he and Mabel flee.
