Gilbert Roland
Biography
Gilbert Roland was a Mexican-born American actor whose screen career ran from the 1920s into the 1980s. Born in Ciudad Juárez, he lived in Texas and headed to Hollywood as a teenager, taking extra work before Paramount gave him a contract; he took his screen name from two of his favorite actors. His first major role came in the comedy The Plastic Age (1925), and sound films brought him romantic leads, including a supporting part in She Done Him Wrong (1933). From the 1940s critics praised his supporting work in We Were Strangers (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Thunder Bay (1953) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964), and he played the Cisco Kid in a run of mid-1940s films. He was twice nominated for Golden Globe Awards, in 1952 and 1964, and his last film was Barbarosa (1982).
