Plot summary
Virginia Allerton, a society figure and pilot, is flying her seaplane, The Lady Bird, with her mechanic Max Raft when a tropical storm catches them. Her brother, Lieutenant George Allerton, is stationed with a Marine detachment on the Pacific island of Palo Pango, and Virginia lands there for refuge. Marines "Stripes" Thornton and "Milly" Barnes welcome her, and Oliver Barton, who runs the trading post and deals in smuggled guns, offers her lodging and bets $5,000 that he can beat her in a flying race to Guam. Both Marines take an interest in her, and Barton's eccentric elderly assistant, "Doc" Spriggs, believes in reincarnation.
