Plot summary
Joe Martini is a San Francisco traffic cop who looked on Father Thomasino as a father. When the priest is stabbed to death in an alley, Joe tells homicide Lieutenant Kilrain that he suspects Sylvio Malatesta, a restaurant owner, and offers to help. Kilrain turns him down, so Joe leaves the force and goes after Malatesta alone. The Malatesta household takes him in without knowing he was a policeman, and Joe comes to care for them, especially Anna, a cousin. Joe cannot tell whether Sylvio is guilty or innocent, and his old loyalties and his new friendships pull against each other.
