Plot summary
In 1917, Portugal is swept by antireligious feeling that followed the 1910 revolution. Churches in Lisbon and elsewhere are shuttered and many priests and monks are jailed, though the small rural town of Fátima has escaped much of it and its church stays open. On May 13, in a field outside town, Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto are praying the Rosary when thunder and lightning send them running into a cloud of light around a small tree, where a Lady stands. She asks them to come back on the 13th of every month and to pray for world peace. Their agnostic friend Hugo da Silva urges them to keep quiet, but Jacinta tells her parents, and Lúcia's mother takes the story for a dangerous lie, forbidding her daughter to return to the Cova da Iria.
