Plot summary
In London, Paula White brings Professor Challenger the journal of her father, the explorer Maple White, lost on an expedition to a plateau on the borders of Peru, Brazil and Colombia. Sketches of dinosaurs in its pages convince Challenger to announce publicly that the creatures still walk the earth. Ridiculed at a meeting at the Zoological Hall, he agrees when a newspaper offers to finance a mission to find Maple White. He sets out with Paula, the sportsman Sir John Roxton, the reporter Edward Malone, who hopes to impress his fiancée, the skeptical Professor Summerlee, the servant Zambo and his butler Austin. At their camp below the plateau, a rock sent down from a ledge above and a Pteranodon eating a young Toxodon bear out the journal's claims.

- In April 1925, on an Imperial Airways London-Paris flight, The Lost World became the first film shown to airline passengers. The nitrate film stock was highly flammable, making the screening risky aboard a converted First World War bomber, the Handley-Page O 400.
- In 1922 Conan Doyle screened Willis O'Brien's test reel to the Society of American Magicians, including Harry Houdini, who watched footage of a Triceratops family and an Allosaurus attack. Doyle refused to discuss the film's origins.
- The Lost World was the first feature-length film made in the United States, and possibly the world, to use model animation, or stop motion, as its primary special effect.
- Willis H. O'Brien, who had used stop motion photography in the 1918 film The Ghost of Slumber Mountain, first combined his animated dinosaurs with live-action humans only by splitting the frame into two parts, a split screen. He later merged them in the same part of the screen.
- The Lost World was the first dinosaur-oriented film hit and led to other dinosaur films, from King Kong to the Jurassic Park series. Michael Crichton named his Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World in homage to Doyle's novel and film.
- For the live-action scenes, the filmmakers used an open sewer behind the MGM studio in Los Angeles as a river.
