Clifton James
Biography
Clifton James was an American actor of film, theater and television who began his career on the New York stage and trained at the Actors Studio, and who was born in Spokane, Washington, and raised in Oregon. He became known for comic-relief Southern lawmen, most famously Sheriff J.W. Pepper in the James Bond films Live and Let Die (1973) and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), a part close to the sheriffs he played in Silver Streak (1976) and Superman II (1980). Earlier he had serious turns as a corrupt country sheriff in The Reivers (1969) and a prison floorwalker in Cool Hand Luke (1967). Other films included The Last Detail (1973), Rancho Deluxe (1975), Eight Men Out (1988) as White Sox owner Charles Comiskey, The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) and Lone Star (1996); he worked repeatedly with director John Sayles. On television he appeared in Gunsmoke, The Dukes of Hazzard and the soap opera Texas.

Early training
James used the G.I. Bill to study at the University of Oregon after the war, and that is where his interest in acting grew. He then moved to New York City and kept studying at the Actors Studio.
