Plot summary
Eugene Ferguson is a well-known American brain surgeon, and he and his wife Helen are spending a vacation in Latin America. A revolution sweeps the country. Soldiers take the couple to Raoul Farrago, the dictator, whose life depends on an operation that only Ferguson can perform. Neither Ferguson nor Helen is free to leave, and the surgeon is given no choice but to take the case. Farrago's wife Isabel and the regime's Colonel Adragon are close at hand as he prepares. In the days that follow, Ferguson trains the assistants who will help with the delicate procedure and watches the brutality the regime practices against its people, Adragon's in particular.

- Future first lady Nancy Davis tested for the lead female role of Helen Ferguson, which went to Paula Raymond in December 1949; MGM hoped Crisis would launch Raymond, whom it saw as the next Norma Shearer, to stardom.
- MGM neglected to secure the rights to George Tabori's short story "The Doubters" from Today's Woman until just before Crisis's release; the magazine then chose not to seek a screen credit rather than risk a dispute with MGM that might harm Tabori.
- Richard Brooks and Arthur Freed cast three of MGM's former Silent Era "Latin-Lover" stars, Antonio Moreno, Ramon Novarro and Gilbert Roland, in support of Cary Grant because of the film's Latin American setting.
