Plot summary
Yancey is a shy, naive mountain trapper traveling through Wyoming with his Uncle Lije and Lije's wife Kiri. When a bear mauls Lije, Yancey is sent to trade the family's beaver pelts for money and goods. The trading post has burned down, so he rides two more days to Casper, where the Fourth of July celebrations are in full swing. Ben Stocker, a sneak thief, offers his oldest daughter Rosalie to Yancey for furs, and Yancey refuses. Rosalie runs away from her father and asks Yancey to take her to town. In Casper he buys her new clothes so she can look for work, and Sheriff Paul Bartell says the dance hall will hire her. Yancey also grows fond of Marcy Howard, whom he meets at the dance hall.
