Plot summary
Karl Westover is a farm boy in post-Civil War Texas who flees to Mexico after accidentally killing a man. Floyd and Otto Pahmeyer, the dead man's brothers, are sent after him by their vengeful father. In Mexico, Karl meets Barbarosa, an outlaw with a near-mythical reputation, who reluctantly takes the clumsy young man on as a partner. Barbarosa has a pursuer of his own: his father-in-law, the wealthy rancher Don Braulio, who wants him killed for marrying his daughter against his will and has sent young Zavala men to hunt him over the years. The pair ride together while the Pahmeyers keep up the chase.
