Plot summary
Based on true events, the story recounts the University of Texas tower shooting on August 1, 1966. Charles Whitman, an engineering student and former Marine, kills his wife and mother before climbing the tower and opening fire on the people below. The shooting leaves many dead and wounded. Ramiro Martinez, a Chicano police officer, is a central figure in the story.

- In 1976 Ramiro Martinez, the police officer at the center of The Deadly Tower, received an undisclosed out-of-court settlement after suing the producers for depicting his wife, a blonde, blue-eyed German, as the nagging Hispanic woman Vinni, played by Maria-Elena Cordero.
- Houston McCoy, one of the two policemen who shot Charles Whitman, sued Turner Broadcasting for $14 million in 1990, claiming the film's portrayal of him as a coward caused him to become an alcoholic and lose his self-respect.
- Because the University of Texas refused to allow filming on its campus, The Deadly Tower was shot between 16 June and 4 July 1975 at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
