Plot summary
Westgate Penitentiary is overcrowded, and fear and violence govern daily life inside it. Warden A.J. Barnes holds less authority than his own guards. Captain Munsey, the chief of security, controls the prisoners through beatings, threats and a method of getting them to inform on one another. Joe Collins, just returned from solitary confinement, is angry and talks about breaking out. His wife Ruth is ill with cancer and will not have an operation unless Joe can be with her, and his lawyer brings him the news. Joe asks Gallagher, who works at the prison newspaper and has been promised parole, to join an escape plan. The prison doctor warns that the place is a powder keg.
