Plot summary
Alec Walker is wealthy, and his marriage to Maida has gone loveless; she married him for the social standing and the family fortune, and she has persuaded his parents that she is the right wife for him. Then Alec meets Julie Eden, a widow, and they fall in love. He asks Maida for a divorce, and she refuses, unwilling to give up what the marriage brings her. A skillful liar, she convinces Alec's parents that Julie is the woman trying to destroy the marriage. Julie has a daughter, Ellen, and her sister Laura was soured on men by her own unhappy past.
