Plot summary
During the summer of 1939, Tom Martin, a pilot who went to Spain to fight in its civil war, waits in a prison cell for a firing squad. His release has been arranged by Augusta Nash, a reporter who posed as his wife to obtain it. A pardon reaches him on the morning of his execution. When the prison governor learns of the deception, Tom and Augusta have to flee.

- Shooting began on the Paramount lot on June 24, 1940, and as filming went on the script was continually rewritten to work in actual events, including the sinking of the SS Athenia and the signing of the France-Germany armistice in the Forest of Compiègne.
- Arise, My Love pays a triple tribute to Ernst Lubitsch, mentor of screenwriter Billy Wilder. Ray Milland sings "Lookie, Lookie, Lookie, Here Comes Cookie", Gary Cooper's song in Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, Claudette Colbert sings "Dream Lover" from The Love Parade, and the film mentions the SS Athenia, on which Lubitsch's baby daughter and her nurse had sailed to America.
