Plot summary
The Tanaka Memorial, a Japanese plan for world conquest attributed to Baron Giichi Tanaka, reaches print in the Tokyo Chronicle in 1929. Japanese secret police come to the newspaper's headquarters and demand that Nick Condon, who runs the paper, disclose who supplied it; he tells them the source was the American press and gives them nothing more. Ollie Miller, the Chronicle reporter who obtained the original document, has been paid for his work and intends to take it out of Japan. At a press bar he displays the money, and a secret police informer in the room takes note of it.
