The XY-21, the first American spaceship sent to Venus, goes down in the Mediterranean off Sicily. Fishermen board the wreck and pull two injured crewmen out before it sinks. In Washington, D.C., Major General A.D. McIntosh learns the ship has been found and flies to Sicily, where a container from the flight is still missing. On the beach, Pepe, a boy, finds a cylinder marked USAF and sells the gelatinous mass inside it to Dr. Leonardo, a zoologist. The mass hatches in Leonardo's trailer and begins to grow.
