Plot summary

Robert Jordan, an American language teacher who had lived in Spain before the war, fights on the Republican side against Francisco Franco's forces. A dynamiter with experience, he is sent behind the lines to blow up a critical bridge so that enemy troops cannot cross to meet an upcoming Republican offensive. Anselmo, an old guerrilla, brings him to a band of anti-fascist fighters led by Pablo, a middle-aged man. There Jordan falls in love with María, a young guerrilla whose parents were executed and who was assaulted by the Falangists when the war began. Jordan's sense of duty clashes with Pablo's unwillingness to help with the operation, which would put him and his band in danger.
