Plot summary
In 1880, William Bonney is a gunslinger with a reputation, known as Billy the Kid. In Lincoln, New Mexico, he helps his friend Pedro Gonzales break out of the jail where Sheriff Cass McAndrews put him, and the two go back to a saloon that had thrown Pedro out because of his ethnicity. Cattle baron Dan Hickey spots Billy and takes him on to pressure farmers into joining his business. Riding with Hickey's men, Billy takes part in a stampede of the farmers' cattle in which a farmer dies, and he feels guilty. Billy then meets Jim Sherwood, a childhood friend who works for the rancher Eric Keating, and Jim gets Billy and Pedro jobs at the Keating ranch instead. There Billy meets Eric's sister Edith.
